DNS-OARC 46 & RIPE 92
In May 2026, Elizabeth Boswell from the group attended DNS-OARC 46 and RIPE 92, both in Edinburgh.
The Domain Name System Operations Analysis and Research Center (DNS-OARC) is an association of DNS operators, implementers, and researchers. The University of Glasgow recently became a member of DNS-OARC, in order to access data captured by the AS112 network. AS112 is a volunteer-run anycast DNS deployment, which responds to DNS queries that were leaked from internal networks, in order to reduce the load that these queries place on the rest of the DNS. Elizabeth presented preliminary findings from this dataset, showing that AS112 receives a significant amount of queries that could be misued when received by a malicious volunteer operator.
DNS-OARC was a great opportunity to make connections with DNS practitioners and researchers. We are very grateful to DNS-OARC for providing us with a supporter membership and a fee waiver!
RIPE92, which was held right after DNS-OARC, was also attended by Elizabeth, and former IPL members Stephen McQuistin and Stephen Strowes. In the DNS working group, Elizabeth presented on our research on AS112 deployment characteristics, recently published in PAM. RIPE featured many interested talks, on topics such as issues with RPKI, IPv6 scanning and the Iranian Internet shutdown.
Additionally, there was an informal meeting to discuss how to better connect researchers and operators.
